Alternative ParentingWhile society may deem many of your gothics, punks, or urban parents as “alternative parents”, there is nothing really different about them than your average parent. While they may be more understanding about clothing, fashion, and finding yourself through the expression of yourself; the roots remain the same. Whether you are the societies perfect standard of parent, or that of which is construed to be an alternative parent; the basis is all the same (love). However, despite what society may think of your parenting style, you have found yourself getting into the swing of things; while exercising your own techniques to help your child to learn. Whether people would like to acknowledge it or not, even your parent’s parents had different parenting styles; that were thought of to be outlandish or alternative. So this isn’t a new term for parents, quite on the contrary. While it use to be alright to spank, or use physical violence to teach your child what not to do; it is now looked upon as if a brutal means of showing your power over a child. Yes, although I do not agree with spanking or raising a hand to a child; others may still feel that it is a necessary punishment for bad behavior. Which of course would term it to be an alternative parenting style than my own. Another of the more “outlandish” practices, that most of society seems to frown upon; is the practice of the family bed. While studies have been repeated countless time, there has been no fruitful information on why a parent shouldn’t continue to practice a family bed; and in fact that it could very well help to strengthen the bond between parent and child, and keep the parent more aware of their child while he or she is around. Another difference, is a choice of whether or not to breast-feed; and if you do and do not wish to do it in public. Where one mother would sneer at another who is breast-feeding a two year old in public, the other may think that it is odd that the new-mother is stuffing the child full of man-made milk substitute. So as you can see, the term “alternative parenting” can and will apply to nearly every parent out there. As not everyone will agree with how you, or your partner have decided to raise your child. Even the main-stream people who pass as your societies “average” parent, have their own personal style of parenting that a not-so-normal by societies standards parent; would disagree with for days on end. Regardless of your parenting method, as long as you keep your child’s best interests in mind; and allow him or her to express themselves through what they wear, what they say; without being destructive to their growing lives.
