Avoiding over-stimulation during the holidays

It's inevitable, from the moment they are born infants seem to soften even the most hardened person. It seems, that almost anyone within arms reach clambers to hold your little one. Well, this is especially true during the holidays. Not only are you dealing with the excess stress of the holidays, but having to deal with an overly tired child as well. However, we parent's aren't the only ones who are feeling the excess grind of the holiday season. Often times, despite the fun and the anticipation of the season, there is also some confusion that goes hand in hand. One of the largest causes of infant, or toddler melt down during this season is that their routines are thrown askew.

One of the biggest tips I can give for any parent, is to try and plan your holiday shopping, get togethers, and any other functions around your child, or children's nap schedules. It is imperative that your child not miss their naps or nap. You should also try to maintain a daily structure of meals, as well as bed times (That's right, the same schedules you had before this hectic season rolled in). IE: if you are going to dinner at your family's home for the holiday get together at seven, and your child normally eats at five. I would suggest allowing your child to eat before heading out that door, to prevent any undue stress.

Another frequent trigger to the over stimulated fits, is shopping. This, as you should know by now is disagreeable even under the normal weekly pretenses. Remember, just because it is the holidays, doesn't mean that your child will enjoy this more. On the contrary, stores are generally more crowded, which in some shy children's minds is far worse. If you have older children, it is important not to do their shopping with them in tow. This again, my cause more unnecessary stress, as they will want the gifts now. Rather, take some "me" time to get your shopping done with the clarity of only your own mind. Set up a play date, have dad watch the kids, or as most grandmothers would say " Over here!".

So, lets run down the few tips I have for you today

*First and foremost: Plan, plan, plan around nap time, meal times and bed time!

* Leave the little ones at home, with a trusted family member, or with a care giver while you attack your shopping alone, or with friends; or even better take your shopping home with you, the internet provides an easy means to shopping for those new onesies, and adorable outfits for your little one.

*Plan out a reasonable amount of time, to be spent at each family gathering.

* And lastly, enjoy yourself. Enjoy your child, and remember to take plenty of pictures. Even if your child is in pre-melt down stage, these are times to cherish throughout your life. Each picture is a keep sake, even if it is of a sulking toddler.
