Baby's bedroom: Selecting a themeSome parent’s may balk at the task of decorating their child’s room, whether it be for a new born infant, toddler, or even pre-teen; while some may revel in the experience. However despite which category that you fall into, the best tried and true method of decorating a child’s bedroom is to do it around a theme or color scheme. It of course is important to get some information from your child themselves, that is assuming that they are old enough to form an opinion on this subject; otherwise following a simple color scheme that can be translated well into your child’s upcoming toddler and pre-teen years, is not only a good idea for decorating but possibly saving you some money in the long run. Decorating your child’s room will be fairly easy, however the time that may be required to do so may vary; depending mostly on the intensity and attention to detail that you put into your child’s room. However I would suggest steering clear of placing permanent murals in an infant’s room that can’t be translated well into your child’s toddler years, as you can spend loads of money trying to paint over these expressive paint jobs. The key most thing to do, is to try to find inspiration from your own child, flipping through your child’s favorite books for some ideas, along with some decorating magazines, books, etc or you can even look for some ideas online; and in before you know it, you will find some great inspiration for a theme or color scheme in your child’s room. It is especially imperative that you involve any older children, by getting their ideas such as choosing favorite colors, sports, artistic interests, story themes, or even a movie character theme; such as Harry Potter, Spider man, Batman, Dragon tails, Dora the explorer etc etc. When you shop for your wall treatments, you should look for wallpaper, border wallpaper, or even some fabric treatments that will help to reinforce the chosen theme throughout the room. You should select a main print such as on a comforter that will set the tone for the entire room, and then accessorizing to give it the needed feel throughout the room; rather than going overly heavy or repetitive on the same prints. If you choose not to use wall paper, you should choose a background color, and some accent colors that can be placed on the walls, floors, and even the ceiling; it is a good idea to use your child’s comforter as a guide to selecting the colors for these. You of course will want to select coordinating fabrics, accessories, and prints that will mix well with your comforter’s colors and patterns, you should use this choice as inspiration throughout the room. While the comforter (and the child’s bed) are generally the focal point of any bedroom, you may choose a different focal point for the room. You may choose to focus on a display shelf, a painted mural, or even a decorative play area; this focal point should generally reinforce your chosen theme throughout the room. Remember while it doesn’t require much, using some imagination while selecting and planning the decorative elements of your child’s bedroom, will show later. You may wish to stop and think of your child’s hobbies; does your child enjoy tennis or volley ball? If so, you may wish to string a net behind the bed for a headboard (this of course is for older children, as it may pose a threat to infants and smaller toddlers). You can also arrange tennis rackets, or deflated volley balls on the wall around the netting, which will help you to enforce the theme that you have chosen throughout the room.
