Baby diaper covers

Like many first time parents, I was dazed by the plethora of items that an infant or child needs. While I had a basic grasp on diapers, wipes, clothing, and formula (or breast milk); I had no inkling what a diaper cover was, or what it purpose was exactly. Weren’t diapers all the cover we needed? You would think so, but in some circumstances they aren’t quite enough. A diaper helps to provide an added waterproof layer, that is needed to keep your child’s clothing dry when a parent uses cloth diapers. A diaper cover is recommended to be used with fitted diapers such as Kissaluvs or folding diapers like Chinese pre-folds or Hemp Babies.

The pull on style diaper cover is generally used when a cloth diaper underneath also has a closure. However if you purchase pre-fold diapers you will need to use a snap or pins to allow the pull-on style of diaper cover’s effective when in use. It is common for a diaper cover to close with a hook and hoop style fastener that will eliminate the need for a pin or fastener when using a folding diaper.

While they are normally used for cloth diapering, it is also fairly common for adults to use one with disposable diapers to catch any leaks that may occur. It is recommended that a parent purchase anywhere from six to eight diaper covers for a newborn infant, and four to six covers for a child for an older infant from 3-12 months, and lastly two to three for older toddlers.

When it comes to selecting your diaper cover you have quite a few choices at hand. Many companies now offer diaper covers in a variety of fabrics such as cotton, fleece, wool, and also a waterproof vinyl cover that aids in the protection of a child who is on the go. While cotton covers are a good to go option during the day, at night time a parent may prefer a breathable wool diaper cover. You may ask how fashionable are they really? Well, truth be told the diaper cover can easily become another accessory for your child. Many of these useful tools come in an array of colors and patterns.

Like many parents I am grateful to the inventor of the diaper cover, Marion Donovan. Without her the diaper cover’s debut would not have come to New York’s Saks Fifth Avenue in nineteen forty nine, where they became an instant success. It wasn’t until nineteen fifty one that Donovan’s patent had been granted, however by that time she had already begun creating the disposable diaper we know and love today.
