Baby pacifiers

There has been a long battle waging between parents, on whether or not a pacifier is good for your child to use. There is an extremely long history of use for the pacifier, as parents have given these handy little tools to their children for comfort. It wasn’t until around the nineteen hundreds that the pacifier began to settle into its modern form. You may ask where it got its familiar nick name of the “Binki”; Well, Binki was one of the first general name for the pacifier in the United States, while Binkey (yes, with a y) was used first as the brand name for pacifiers and other infant products in nineteen thirty five.

While their popularity has grown, in comforting children. It is important to remember, that there are a few things to remember. Many pediatricians and dentists are at opposing lines of this fight. While pediatricians may approve of the use of a pacifier to calm a teething child, a dentist may be opposed because of the potential risk to the child’s growing teeth. This is especially true if you employ tactics such as adding syrup or honey to your child’s pacifier. Both of which should be avoided greatly, especially honey; as it has been linked to the risk of botulism in young children. It has also been proven that pacifiers may cause a higher risk of ear infections, or delayed speech in older infants.

However, on a more positive note; researchers have found that the use of a pacifier is associated with a substantial lowering of the risk of SIDS (also known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). It was in a study published by the American Pediatric Association in October two thousand and five, that supports the benefits up to one year of age. For this reason your pediatrician may suggest several different types and brands of pacifiers for your child’s use.

When selecting a pacifier you should always know the brand. While some may be designed to have less impact on your child’s teeth, and some may aid in teething; others may do some damage. For this reason, you should always read up on manufacturer specifics, along with reading consumer reports, and asking your pediatrician’s advice. After you have chosen the first brand of pacifier, there is nothing stating that your child will enjoy that pacifier; so I would suggest purchasing one or two packages of different brands, and allow your child to choose which is right for them.
