Choosing a coat for babyOnce you become a parent, you will often find that your child’s needs are great. This is especially true during the change of seasons, from winter to spring and summer to fall; there are many things that your child will need to protect them from the elements. As you might already know, a toddler’s winter coat selection comes in all shapes, colors, and sizes. While some are made for play, others are meant to simply look nice for those special occasions. However, while you go shopping for a child’s winter coat or even a light spring or fall jacket; there are several things you should keep in mind. The first step in finding the right coat, is to determine what purpose you need the coat to serve. You will need to ask yourself, if your child will wear the coat while playing outside, or only for special occasions. You will also need to keep in mind the weather that you are intending the coat, or jacket. Whether it is for warm weather, or to ward off the harsh chill of winter. These are all things that you will need to take into consideration, however the best way to do this; is by considering what you yourself would wear during the current season. Secondly, you will want to make sure that the coat or jacket has a waterproof outer layer; and depending on the weather you may want to check if it has an insulated inner layer primarily used for winter during play outside. However some coats may prove to be more versatile, usually a winter coat that has a zip out liner; that can be removed during warmer seasons. This is a great way to get the most out of a child’s coat, depending on how old they are; as their growth spurts may cause you to need to purchase another jacket anyway. You will need to make sure that your toddler’s coat has an elastic band, or a drawstring around the waist; so that during the coldest of seasons, the air and snow cannot blow up and inside the coat. Finding a coat or a jacket with either a affixed or removable hood is also a good idea, however you should make sure that it fits snugly around the head or chin of your child. One of the most important things to remember, is to find a coat or a jacket; that doesn’t restrict your child’s movement. Coats or jackets that are too long, can cause your child to trip while they are running or playing. You should also double check that the coat is not too short, for this reason it is good to have your child there while you shop for the coat or jacket, having him or her raise their arms upward to make sure that their tummy is not exposed to the elements. Another important thing to remember, is to find a jacket or coat that is machine washable; as a toddler can get their clothing dirty quickly, you should try to pass on dry clean only coats or jackets that can cost you a small fortune to keep clean.
