Choosing a crib mattress

When new parents bring home their new born, their mind isn’t set on what they have waiting at home but what they carry in their arms. However having a comfortable, safe, and cozy crib mattress is an important item to help allow the new baby to get a good night’s sleep. If a crib mattress is well constructed and fairly comfortable, the child will have a tenancy to sleep through the night more quickly, which is an event that almost all new parents look forward to, so that they can get back to sleeping through the night themselves. It is more than likely, like most parents that you have purchased the mattress prior to the birth of your new addition; however if this is not you, or you are still expecting remember that while you are shopping for a new crib or cradle mattress; you should be conscious of the fact that a baby mattress can provide support to the growing muscles and bones of a child. This baby mattress will more than likely be used for anywhere around two to three years, before your child moves into a toddler bed; therefore the quality and construction will make a huge difference.

Foam mattresses in cribs or cradles are often preferred by many parents, because they weigh less. Which makes changing the sheets, and turning the mattress a much easier task. Foam mattresses are generally filled with polyester or polyether and can be purchased in a variety of thicknesses; while it may seem at first glance that the thicker is better, but that isn’t necessarily true. Density is the point which should be used to compare a foam or cradle mattress for your child’s cradle or crib. The most basic ideal density is around one and a half pounds per cubic foot, however most manufacturers do not list this information on bedding labels; so you can either do your research online, or compare by feeling each selections and choose a dense, supportive baby mattress for your new addition. Remember, the firmer the better for those sleepy little heads.

While foam is popular, Inner spring crib and cradle mattresses are also a popular option for infant bedding. Many parents still prefer mattresses that are constructed this way, simply because they hold the shape during long and hard wear and tear. Remember the firmness of this mattress is directly related to the number of coils in this type of baby bed mattress, and a good rule of thumb is to look for an infant mattress with a minimum of at least one hundred and fifty coils, so that your child’s body is well supported while they sleep. Remember regardless of the mattress type you select, the fit of the mattress is crucial. If the mattress is too small, the child can roll between the mattress and the side of the cradle or crib; and pose a suffocation threat. If you can place two fingers between the mattress and the side of the bed, the mattress is too small for that cradle or crib. Along these notes, firm bedding should be chosen for an infants bed, as too soft of bedding has been linked to some instances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
