Infant Safety

When it comes to the safety of your newborn or growing child, the thoughts can be overwhelming with all that needs to be done. As if preparing for your baby isn’t hard enough, your mind runs rampant with all the things that could go wrong and what you can do now to prevent it. Let me help ease the stress by letting you in on all I know for the new love in your life.

Before your baby even comes into the world your mind and body go through a nesting stage. Take advantage of the new found energy to clean, sanitize, and making everything perfect for the coming home of your baby. Make sure all of the baby blankets, clothes or anything of cloth material are washed with a baby safe detergent, personally I was Dreft both detergent and dryer sheets. Other detergents have too many chemicals for the baby’s skin to handle and could resort in skin rashes and breakouts. After the fabrics are taken care of you’ll have to boil all pacifiers, plastic toys that will eventually make it into their month, baby bottles, even the nipples. This will help sterilize anything. To bring your baby home you’ll need an up to date five point baby car seat. To make your life easy, I would recommend a car seat that comes with a base so you don’t have to keep readjusting a seatbelt strap. When setting up your babies’ nursery remember not to put the baby crib under a window. This will help you keep the baby from getting to hot or cold and always place your baby on their back to sleep, they are not yet strong enough to lift their head and keep themselves from suffocating. Remember, its baby’s first instinct to put things in their month so make sure there is nothing in the crib that they can choke on, even more so when they learn to roll over on their own. It is a good exercise for the baby to lay on their stomach, just make sure you watch them while they do it for the first couple of months.

If you’re a pet owner, there are so many things you have to keep in mind. For starters, pregnant women should never change or even smell kitty litter; there are poisonous chemical that can harm an unborn child. When putting your baby down to sleep, keep an eye on the cats. They like to cuddle with the babies keeping them company and have been known to smother them, not even realizing it. If you have dogs, it’s best to gradually let them get use to the baby. First, by letting them smell one of the baby blankets or even a diaper. Then let the dog smell your baby while holding him, that way you can move him quickly if the dog doesn’t react well. The other thing you should watch for is if your dog is a jealous dog, they have to adjust to having a baby in the picture just as much as you do and there have been stories of things going wrong with jealous dogs. As far as other animal pets go, I would recommend just keeping them away from the baby for the first while. You never know what animals are caring, as far germs even diseases that are too much for little babies immune systems to handle.
