Movement prorgam techniques for infantsAlong with massage parents should also have their infants participate in a movement program. According to research infants who are involved in movement programs as a whole; generally talk far earlier, have better appetites, sleep more soundly and solidly through the night, and experience a greater acceleration in their motor skill development. Rather than children who are not exercised, while the parent’s who do not participate may often question this method of exercise programs for babies; they have also been known to help coordination, agility, flexibility, as well as their strength. As with any new program that you would like to start with your child, you should obtain approval from your child’s doctor, prior to participating in it. You should provide a basic pamphlet to your doctor; which will enable them to make an educated decision on what is right for your child. You will also need to become familiar with infant and child development; creating routines and movements that will meet the guidelines for the development stage that they are in. Using a soft surface such as a mat, or folded blankets you will place your child upon. You will need to keep the movement sessions to a maximum of twenty minutes, and should not allow more than two sessions per day for your child. So it is imperative that you speak with any other care providers that will be helping you with the movement routines. You and any other care provider should take their cues from the baby, if the child is crying or acting as if they are agitated; the session should stop immediately. Do not try to exercise a child while they are hungry or tired; or even a child who has just eaten. Make sure your child has had their nap and a meal about thirty minutes prior to starting your daily motion routine. While participating in a movement program, it is important to use gentle and fluid movements; avoiding any quick or jerky movements. It is imperative to NEVER force a joint into a position, doing so can harm your baby. You will begin by moving the joints that are the closest to the child’s torso, and work outward. I would suggest putting on some relaxing music, or sing to your child during this process; to aid in a comfortable atmosphere. It is of course important to have fun with this, it should not be a job or mechanical work; it should be fun and playful to help stimulate a stronger bond with your child. You should repeat each exercise about five to ten times, however I would suggest less in the beginning. These exercises must be age appropriate, if the child cannot hold their head up as of yet; the parent MUST support the child’s neck and head. Very young infants may be too weak to begin these exercised, as they can startle quite easily and become quickly over stimulated.
