Newborn baby shopping checklistIf you are expecting your first child, or even your second, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what you will need to have on hand to care for your little one. Just walking into a baby items store can make your head spin, especially if you haven’t done any research or decided what types of things you need to shop for before your baby arrives. It is important to make a few basic decisions about your lifestyle and how your baby will fit into it before you start shopping, registering, or accepting all of your friend’s used baby items. Let us help you create the right newborn baby shopping checklist for you. The first items on the newborn baby shopping checklist are the large things like furniture. Cribs, bassinets, dressers, changing tables, rocking chairs, swings, bathtubs, diaper pails, car seats, strollers, and other storage furniture are the items in this category. Many new parents will choose to buy everything, and this is fine if you have a large budget and plenty of space in your home. But other parents choose to delay their purchase of some items or not buy many of the unnecessary things. For example, in the beginning, you might prefer to just buy a bassinet and wait to purchase the crib. Many parents choose to co-sleep and in this case won’t need to buy a crib at all. Rocking chairs, swings, and bathtubs are optional and you might wait to see if you want or need them before purchasing. Each parent and home is different so don’t feel like you have to buy everything right away. The second items on the newborn baby shopping checklist are the medium-sized items such as diaper bags, nursing pillows, breast pumps, baby monitors, thermometers, baby slings, and smaller storage solutions. Deciding whether or not you need all of these items also depends on your lifestyle and home. For example, if you are bringing your baby home to a one-bedroom apartment, you may not need a baby monitor, or if you are planning to formula feed your baby, you won’t need a breast pump. In some cases, it is a good idea to wait and see what you need or want after the baby is born, while when it comes to other items, such as a baby thermometer, it is a good idea to get them before the baby arrives. The third items on the newborn baby shopping checklist are the small items. This category can be a bit overwhelming because there are so many things you need to shop for. In this case, it is a good idea to break the items down by category. For example, the feeding category will include bottles, pacifiers, bottle brushes or other cleaning accessories, breast pads and nursing bras, and a bottle warmer. The baby care category will include sponges, soaps, lotions and shampoos, bath toys, towels and wash cloths, baby powder, nail clippers, brushes and combs, diapers, wipes, diaper rash ointment, and nasal aspirators. Finally, there is the safety category which includes outlet covers, safety gates, locks and latches and corner bumpers. Most safety items aren’t necessary to have right away, since the baby won’t be moving around without your help in the beginning. Just don’t forget the baby proofing items when it comes time! Finally, the last items on the newborn baby shopping checklist are the clothing and linens. Many of the newborn size baby clothes will, of course, be gifted to you and your baby at your numerous baby showers, but it is important to have everything you need before baby arrives. When it comes to clothing, you’ll want One pieces, pajamas and sleepers, socks, booties and shoes, shirts, pants and/or dresses, sweaters, jackets, mittens and a good coat (depending on your local climate), plus hats or caps to keep the sun or cold at bay. The bedding and linens category will vary depending on your needs. All parents should have a nice supply of receiving blankets and quilts and if you have chosen to use a crib right away, you will need crib sheets and bumpers as well.
