Onesies and snapsuitsAs any parent, or anyone who has spent time with an infant should know; the invention of the infant and toddler onesies and snap suit has benefitted many adults in their life. These brilliant little clothes allow a parent to clothe their child, without the worry of a loose t-shirt smothering a new born or becoming the helpless plaything of a toddler. While this vital piece of clothing is important to parents, some may not truly understand what it is. A onesie is an article of infants clothing, that helps to cover the upper body, while snapping between the legs to make diaper changing easier. The onesie (or one size) is the American English term for a one piece body suit that is designed to conceal a diaper when it is worn, it is also sometimes referred to a creeper or a diaper shirt. All of which is derived from the British English style of the babygro (which wis trademarked to Gerber Children’s wear Inc.) All of which were first developed in America. The babygro was invented in the United States in the early nineteen fifties by a Mr. Walter Artzt (that’s right, a man!) There is also what is considered a snap suit, which is a similar clothing article. In a snap suit the shirt extends past the waist and over the legs, and has snaps or buttons that allow it to be closed over a diaper. Both of these wonderful pieces of clothing are beneficial to both the child and the care giver, this is especially true because they offer support to keep the diaper in place (that means less worry about the dreaded leakage!) The infant onesie can often be found replacing a common t-shirt for it’s ability to stay tucked inside of the waist of pants. This of course is difficult to accomplish with a traditional t-shirt. Onesies can also be made with the shirting material extending down to the thigh (about half way to the knees), this would be considered a snap suit which negates the necessity for pants. The easy to access snaps continue the trend of easy to change diapers. They may also extend to cover the entire leg and feet, which makes these extremely versatile outfits into a jumpsuit style sleeper. If you are not a parent yourself, but are instead looking for something that will be appreciated for a child. The onesie is always a wonderful gift to give, and receive. However when you are looking into making a purchase make sure that you have the parent’s fashion sense in mind IE: if you are making a purchase for an alternative parent try to steer clear of the mainstream pinks, blues, and pastel yellows. Things that sport skull and crossbones, band logo onesies, or even one that is a solid color such as black, crimson, or dark purples and blues.
