Packing a diaper bag - Essentials checklist

As a parent you should probably know by now, that the diaper bag is both a needed friend to a mother or father; as well as a hated foe. While it is packed with everything you need to get through the day, it can ease your stress by at least half; on the other hand however, if it barren and left un-stocked it can become a stressor all on its own accord. However, there are a few measures that you can take to insure that it is the helpful tool it was intended to be. Below I have compiled a helpful list of items that you may not think about as being necessities, but will make your life much easier. It is important to keep in mind however, that things may vary depending on whether you are breast feeding your child, bottle feeding, or if your child is eating solid foods. While you have probably already obtained a diaper bag, it is also wise to purchase one that can preform double duty as both your purse as well as your diaper bag; to help lighten your load a little bit.

Diaper bag essentials checklist:

Diapering and Clothing necessities:

* Six to ten diapers should be packed along, depending on how long your outing is intended to be. I would suggest over-packing with these items, as you never quite know what will happen from point A to point B.

* Travel sized container filled with wipes, or a full-sized wipe container that can be re-filled.

* One to two plastic non-disposable or disposable changing pads.

* Diaper rash cream, ointment, or powder.

* Zip lock bags; so you can place soiled clothing in and for diaper disposal.

* Change of weather appropriate clothing.

* A hat which is weather appropriate.

Feeding and snacks:

* Bottles for expressed breast milk or formula.

* Can of formula or containers of pre measured formula (check the expiration frequently)

* four to five burp cloths

* Bottle of water for you and your infant if you are using powdered or concentrated formula.

* Jarred or canned baby food and infant spoons

* Portable snacks for you and your child

* Two to three bibs.

Play and soothing:

* One to two blankets.

* One to two pacifiers.

* Comforting toys such as a stuffed animal.

* Teething rings.

* Small board books.

Emergency preparation and safety:

* Band aids ( My daughter is allergic to adhesive, so make sure they are previously used brands)
* Hand sanatizer.

* Antibiotic ointment like bacitracin or A & D.

* Cell phone.

* Tissues.

* 15 or higher SPF sun block.

* Fever reducer or pain reliever for both you, and your child.

* Twenty dollars and some quarters to allow for emergencies.

When you are packing your diaper bag, you should keep your child in mind both their mentality as well as their health at that time. You should pack one diaper for about every two hours you plan to be out of the house; however if your child is ill I would suggest packing a few extra in case of diarrhea and other stomach problems. While you are choosing a blanket, hat or coat for your child try to keep the weather in mind. It is also important to keep your own habits in mind as well, if you have a tendency to forget your keys; have a spare made up and place it within your diaper bag. This is extremely helpful if you have a car that has an auto lock feature when the driver’s door shuts; as you may have grabbed the bag already however not the baby.

You should also keep any prescribed medications for both yourself and your child in the diaper bag. Another key item is packing a camera along, since you never know when you are going to want to take a snap shot of the upcoming precious and unforgettable moment.
