Buying your baby's first pair of shoes 2

As you have read in the opening of this article series on purchasing your child’s first pair of shoes. That it is extremely important to keep safety in mind at all times. While fashion is always a wonderful thing, with such a young child it isn’t alright to sacrifice comfort and safety for fashion. Instead, you should opt to follow a few set guidelines for finding that perfect match. However, as stated prior; if your child does need special needs regarding his or her feet; you should always contact your pediatrician for further information and answers to your questions.

First, when you are looking for that perfect pair of baby shoes for your child. You should always try to find a shoe that is both soft and flexible, but has enough of a sole to protect your child’s feet from any hazards. Unlike the soft-soled shoes (consisting of fabric and leather only), they will typically have a rubberized sole; made to protect your child’s feet when he or she walks. While they might be adorable; for your child’s first pair of shoes you should steer clear of any shoes that might have extra thick soles. They can cause a tripping hazard for your child, especially when your child is still learning to walk. Another thing to keep in mind, is whether or not your child’s ankles truly need the support of a high-top shoe. While they are popular, they can often times limit much-needed movement for a child who is still learning to walk. However, if you do choose a high-top shoe, make sure that your child is able to wiggle his or her toes and ankles without any problems.

Remember when choosing that perfect shoe, to keep some simple things in mind about your own. We all enjoy a shoe that can breath, as will your child. While sandals may not be the best option for a child who is first starting out, offering a closed-toe shoe made of breathable canvas is always a good option.

After you have selected a couple of pairs of shoes, it is now time for a fitting. Remember that you should take your child into your local retailer, at very least to get his or her size updated. Many places will size out your child’s feet for free, and it is relatively quick depending on the season. You should always ask that the employee measure both of your child’s feet, making sure to cater the size of your purchase to the larger of the two. However, do not get over zealous and try to purchase one size too big. While this is common practice in some homes, it can pose a very serious risk to your child’s safety. Not only does it cause a tripping hazard, but it can increase the likelihood of serious injury. So instead, make sure that the shoe fits properly!

When shopping for children’s shoes, you will be met with the same questions that many parents have. While some may tend to be divided on the issues of laces vs velcro; many pediatricians will agree that velcro straps are the better of the two options to begin with. While velcro straps are much easier for your child to learn to take off later, they will prevent any loose laces from causing a tripping hazard. After your child has learned to walk and run with no problems, you can then move to the laces.

A few words of advice for the closing of this article duo. Remember that by the end of the day, your feet and your child’s feet will be swollen. Try to keep your shopping trip in the earlier hours, and plan around your child’s naps. Do not make your trips longer than an hour to two hours at most. Also, after finding that perfect pair of shoes. You should check your child’s shoes for fit at -least- once a month. Children tend to grow extremely fast, which makes it important to keep on top of those shoes!
