Security blankets

As you might have already noticed, your child may be clinging to his or her own security blanket with the intent of never letting go. There has been a recent study that has been published, that suggests that a child thinks of this security blanket as unique property or an “essence”. The study was preformed by Professor Bruce Hood who is from the University of Bristol; along with his colleague Dr Paul Bloom from Yale University. They had shown that three to six year old children, do show a preference for their cherished blankets; even when they were offered identical or duplicate blankets. These children were taken to a scientific appearing machine, in which an accomplice would place the “replica” from behind a screen; however the children showed no preference for the duplicate items, unless the object that was copied was special (Such as one taken to bed every night.) There were a handful of children that out-right refused to have their special items replicated at all, however those who were persuaded to place their favorite little blanket into the copy machine; showed no interest, and wanted the original back.

This experiment goes to show, just how important that tattered security blanket is to your child; or will be for a younger infant. For this reason, it is suggested that a parent obtain an item that would be able to last throughout a long length of time; a durable blanket if you will. A security blanket should be able to stand up to the years of abuse, that an infant or toddler will place upon it. However, regardless of the fact that your child will probably figure it out; if the blanket was replaced after it has been mauled, I would still highly suggest purchasing at least two of the same blankets during that time. Allowing your child to rotate through both blankets during his or her first year of life, getting your child accustomed to both of them; so that once the day comes to replace their self-chosen favorite, it can become a much easier transition.

When you are selecting that perfect soon-to-be security blanket, you will be faced with a wide range of selections. For this reason, it is important to find the one that is the perfect match for you, your child, and your family. If you have an aversion to the pastel colorations, and gender specific prints; I would suggest taking a look around this site, as we offer many unique and alternative options for you to choose from.
