Which toys are right for your child?

As any young parent might find, that there are many people willing to give them advice. Whether it is welcomed or not you may become bombarded, by opinions on things such as which clothing your child wears, to the toys they play with. There is a fine line between education, and play when it comes to a toddler. They use play to learn about the world around them, whether it be placing a doll into a stroller and pushing, or playing with a leap pad. The only reason I chose to vote for this side, is simply because almost all toys can be educational if used correctly. For a ball to become educational, however it will require some parental participation. While, letting a child sit with a ring stack alone, allows them to make mistakes and learn from them. There are too many different variables to toys, to truly decipher which ones are educational, and which are not.

However, I do know that I will stand by educational tools and toys. During the holidays, I will be the first to grab a stack of books for our daughter, over a stuffed animal any day of the week. Of course, our daughter still has some stuffed animals. Although, we try to obtain different animals every time one is purchased. These of course, are used as a teaching aid by simply naming the animal, and teaching the sound associated. This, so far has worked like a dream.

Not sure of how to make even the simplest of toys, into an educational warehouse of fun times? Well I will try to help ease you into the transition, from infancy to toddler through play.

A simple medium sized ball, is good for nearly anything. However, teaching your child to roll, throw, and kick the ball helps to fine tune motor skills. We would also grab out a bunch of pots, and pans and allowed our daughter to figure out whether or not, she could fit the ball inside without much resistance. This allowed her to understand sizes a bit better, in her day to day life. These games can also be done by using several other toys, and not just a ball. However, it is a simple, and affordable way for parents to teach their children.

Music time, another favorite in our home. Some people, may beg to differ about the importance of music in a child's life. However, In my mind it does help cognitive decision making through music, and dance. Not only is it educational, but it helps to get all of the excess wiggles from your child. (We generally partake in music time right before bed, which helps her ease into sleep much easier).

Along the same lines, would be a creativity hour. Setting your child down with a set of mess-free markers (I prefer Crayola's colorless markers, however the coloring books tend to get fairly expensive), and allow them to express themselves through their artwork. It may look like just scribbles, however it is just another way of exploring the world. Just keep in mind, this art-time will depend on the behavior of each individual child, and the one on one time the parent participates in.

I will simply conclude, that I would much rather spend money on educational tools. While what I deem educational, might not conform to the traditional sense of education. However, I believe that I am raising a beautiful, and bright little girl. We enjoy our time together, learning, laughing, and loving. I hope that you, and your family will do the same.
